This may range from diesel and petrol mechanics, engine rebuilds, transmission specialists, fleet servicing, exhaust repairers, panel beaters, testing stations, small motor repairs and servicing, machinists, pump maintenance, electronic equipment repair and servicing ... the list will hopefully become very large as time and interest gathers. The Motor Trade Association (MTA)

+The Motor Trade Association (MTA) is a voluntary, industry body. Membership of the Association includes general repairers, specialist repairers such as auto electricians, auto air conditioners, service station operators, automotive body repairers, automotive recyclers and dismantlers and automotive alternative fuel installers.

The Association deals with complaints about unethical behaviour or unfair practices, overpricing, standard of work done or service performed and negligent work, advice or service. Complaints can be made in writing or by phone to your local Motor Trade Association branch. There is a branch of the Association in most regions. The Association will act as a mediator between the parties and try to find a resolution. Remedies can include a refund, a reduction in the bill or an undertaking that the work will be performed to a satisfactory standard. The MTA has no formal powers but members can be expelled for a serious breach of the Association's Code of Ethics. The Association's services are free to consumers.

The Association also produces a monthly magazine, Radiator, which contains automotive information. The magazine is available by subscription through the MTA.

The New Zealand Collision Repair Association is an industry organisation representing panelbeaters, spraypainters, radiator repairers, motor trimmers, plastic repairers and motor body builders. Each member is required to adhere to a code of ethics.

Members guarantee their work for a minimum of 12 months (or 12,000 km). If the vehicle is subject to an extended warranty from a manufacturer, for example, 3 years or 100,000 km, the work is guaranteed for this time as well.

If you have a complaint, the Association recommends you first try to resolve the matter with the member concerned. If you are not satisfied and it is less than 12 months since the work was completed, you can take your complaint to the Association. The Association will mediate between the parties and try to resolve the matter. If the matter remains unresolved, the relevant local branch will set up a committee of its own members to investigate. The Association charges a fee of $135 for this service. The fee is refundable if your complaint is upheld. The Association has no formal powers but members can be expelled.
