this site has been developed to give visitors access to contractors that work in the plumbing industry and associated sectors in New Zealand. This may range from suppliers of pipes and fittings, plumbers, ventilation installers, heating and ducting manufactures, sprinkler installation and maintenance, pump providers, roofers, gas fitting, solar panels and drain unblockers, the list will hopefully become very large as time and interest gathers. The New Zealand Society of Master Plumbers & Gasfitters is a voluntary, industry
body. Some, but not all, plumbers, drainlayers and gasfitters belong to the Society. The
Society deals with complaints about unethical behaviour, overpricing, the standard of work
done or service provided and negligent, work, advice or service in respect of society
members.
Complaints should be made in writing to your local Association of the Society. Addresses
are listed in the Yellow Pages. An address list can also be obtained from the Society's
national office in Wellington. The local Association’s Disputes Committee
investigates complaints. The Society has no formal powers but members can be dismissed.
Serious cases can be referred to the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. The Board
has the power to censure, fine, suspend or remove a plumber, drainlayer or gasfitter form
the register.

The Board's Statutory Authority
The Board is a Statutory Board set up as a body corporate in terms of the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Act 1976. It was originally part of the Ministry of Health but was made a separate body corporate in 1978. It is industry driven and its registration/licensing functions are totally funded by revenue from licence fees.
In 1992 an amendment to the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Act gave the Board an additional function to ensure that all craftsman gasfitters, gas inspectors and registered gasfitters maintain an adequate level of competence in the field of work in which they are registered.
The Board, in terms of the Gas Act and Gas Regulations of that same period, were required to put in place a gas certification regime to deal with the recording and monitoring of the gas certification system as laid down in the Gas Act 1992 and Gas Regulations 1993.
All gasfitting certification administration and gas competency auditing is funded by gas certification sales and not licence fees. The Board keeps separate sets of accounts for registration and certification functions.

There are currently 10 Board Members.

| Two members are nominated by the Plumbing Employees Organisation. |
| One member is nominated by the Gas Association of NZ. |
| One member is nominated by the NZ Master Drainlayers Association. |
| Two members are nominated by Local Government NZ. |
| One member is the nomination of the Minister of Health. |
| One member is nominated by the Director General of Health to represent the Director General on the Board. |
Board Members are appointed for a three year term by the Minister of Health.
The Board's Mission Statement
The Board's mission Statement outlines its role in safeguarding the health and safety of people, their property and of the environment by means of practitioner registration and licensing for the plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying trades and by ensuring competence is maintained at an adequate level by practitioner auditing.
